Four Steps to Raising a Child with Grit

As parents, we want to watch our children shine. It’s tempting to only put them in activities they thrive in, but by doing so you miss out on the opportunity to teach them grit.

Here’s the thing… Your child is going to experience mistakes and failures throughout their entire life.

It’s inevitable.

And unfortunately, you won’t always be there to help them through it.

This is the time to teach your little one how to get back up, dust off their knees, and keep going - even when it’s hard.

Here are 4 steps to teaching your child grit:

  1. Find the Right Challenge

Expose your child to various activities and find one that doesn’t come easily to them.

2. Validate and encourage their effort, regardless of the outcome.

Support your child through their mistakes and failures so that when they get older - they’ll know how to support themselves.

3. Handle your own mistakes with grace & self-love

As parents, we can show our kids that it’s OK to make mistakes by bouncing back from our own without self-judgment.

4. Stick with the challenge till the end

If it’s a sport, don’t quit midseason. Remind your child(ren) that they made a commitment and they need to follow through with it.

I hope it helps.

With love,

Caryn
